Most common questions answered

Is Original more secure than One?

Rimgard One and Rimgard Original use the same patented locking technology and are engineered to make wheel theft impossible. The difference is in design approach:

  • Rimgard One secures the wheel through an advanced lockable fixing system
  • Rimgard Original adds an extra outer shield that fully covers the lug area on certain vehicles

Both are equally protective. Original simply includes an additional physical layer of lug shielding where the vehicle platform allows it.

Why isn’t Original available for Corolla / Kia EV-series?

Because these vehicles require a different wheel architecture solution.

Toyota Corolla and Kia platforms use nut-based wheel fixings that are best served by Rimgard One Nut Base, which is specifically engineered for those models. Rimgard Original is produced only for vehicles where a fully enclosed lug-shield design is possible. Availability is based entirely on fitment and compatibility not on differences in security.

Does Rimgard withstand corrosion?

Rimgard locks are tested for corrosion and we have checked for their endurance by driving for more than 1,000,000 kilometers with the locks installed in a Scandinavian climate, without complications.

The cylinders are bottomless and can be cleared with high pressure air. We recommend that you apply a non metallic grease and lock lubricant oil twice a year.

Is wheel theft common?

Yes, as it is becoming harder and harder to steal entire cars due to improvements in security systems, thieves are targeting car parts to a greater extent. It's also easier to get rid of car parts without getting caught, rather than an entire car.

Locking bolts and lug nuts haven't improved significantly since their introduction to the market in the 60s. Thieves, on the other hand, have become more skilled. That's why locking bolts are no longer a match for them. Hence why Rimgard was invented, so that car owners can actually feel peace of mind knowing their wheels will stay safe.

Are there master keys?

NO master keys are made. Locks with master keys can only get certified for three months. After this, the master keys are considered to be too widely spread for the lock to be considered safe.

Can the lock be picked?

We know that YouTube is full of impressive videos showing skilled lock pickers opening locks in no time. But keep in mind:

These are professionals who train and compete in lock picking, practicing as if it were a sport.

They work under ideal conditions perfect lighting, steady workbenches, quiet environments not on the side of a street or in a garage under pressure.

Our goal is to stop real-world wheel thieves, not professional lock sport enthusiasts.

That’s why Rimgard uses a high-security cylinder from Assa Abloy, a world-leading lock manufacturer. This lock is specifically designed for demanding environments and is extremely resistant to manipulation and picking.

Can the lock be drilled?

Thieves want to be swift and discreet. While it’s true that with enough time and the right tools almost anything can be drilled, doing so is loud, time-consuming, and attracts attention. That makes it an unrealistic method for stealing wheels in the middle of a street.

What about a crow bar?

When Rimgard One is installed on the wheels it is designed for, prying the module off is going to be very hard, take alot of time and damage the wheel badly.

All wheels are different and Rimgard will only perform at its best when installed on the wheels designed for.
